It is important to have an instrument on the first day of class. If you do not already have one, you can choose to rent or buy. Please get your instrument the week before the first day of class so that it is ready to go for Monday (don’t forget to bring it to school on band days!)

Rent

Certain music shops have instrument rentals. Usually the cost is around $25 per month. Here are the best rental in the area:

  • Metropolitan Music
  • Music & Arts
  • Kennelly Keys

Often you can walk into a store and walk out with your rental instrument that day.

Buy

There are many instruments out there, but they are not all the same quality. You will look for a beginner instrument, sometimes called a “student model,” which will work well for your child and be a reasonable price.

Recommended Brands (not required)

  • Yamaha – any instrument
  • Pearl, Gemeinhardt – Flute
  • Selmer – Clarinet
  • Bach, Jupiter – Trumpet
  • Bach – Trombone

Please do not buy a “cool-colored” instrument, such as a bright purple flute or trumpet, as these are made from poor materials.*

Music Stand

In addition to an instrument, you will need a music stand. We are working to find music stands that can be leveraged during band practice (more to come) but having a music stand at home will be essential for practicing.

You will need to purchase the Accent on Achievement, book 1. These are usually available at local music shops and of course can be found online at alfred.com or other online retailers. Please make sure to check the top right corner for your instrument and “Book 1”.

Please have this book on hand at each practice.

Optional: You can view the list of private instructors if you are interested in pursuing additional music support outside of band.
