Healthy Hawks Club

 

New this year, Arrowhead PTA is introducing a Healthy Hawks club made up of parents, teachers, and students bringing activities to the school focusing on healthy lifestyles and overall wellness.  A team of parents met and discussed the club goals which can be seen at the bottom of this page.

The PTA in partnership with Arrowhead’s head cook Kathy Royea and students at Bastyr University are excited to offer a new Arrowhead Cooking Club.

 

Club Details:

  • Cooking Curriculum is designed for 3rd-6th graders with future plans for younger grades to participate
  • Club can hold up to 15 students so sign up soon before spots are filled!
  • Cost = $20 per student for food and cooking supplies
  • Program will meet on the following 6 Tuesdays after school from 3:35-4:35 PM in the Arrowhead kitchen
      • 1st session - Tuesday 1/10
      • 2nd session - Tuesday 1/17
      • 3rd session - Tuesday 1/31
      • 4th session - Tuesday 2/7
      • 5th session - Tuesday 2/14
      • 6th session - Tuesday 2/28

USDA Recommendations

 

Balancing Calories

  Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  Avoid oversized portions.
 
  Foods to Increase
  Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
  Make at least half your grains whole grains.
  Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
 
  Foods to Reduce
  Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals and choose the foods with lower numbers.
  Drink water instead of sugary drinks. 

The following are the Healthy Hawks club goals:

 

  • Having a 6 week session from Nov.-Jan. after school and either have Kathy Royea (Arrowhead kitchen manager) and/or Bastyr students teach classes related to healthy snacking and appropriate portion sizes.  Possible takeaway of a healthy cookbook compiled by student participants.
  • Working with Michele Obama's Chefs Move to School USDA program.  More information about this program can be found at the Chefs Move to School website.
  • Having a schoolwide assembly in March to recognize National Nutrition Month.  Looking into possible speakers and chefs .
  • Working with Fernell Miller to encourage kids to participate in her Healthy Hawks afterschool fitness clubs. Register now with Ms. Miller for the Healthy Hawks afterschool club offered for grades 1-3 on Mon/Wed and grades 4-6 on Tue/Th.  Clubs begin week of November 28 and run until Holiday Break.
  • Applying for a Lowe's grant to purchase a greenhouse for growing healthy foods onsite at Arrowhead. 
  • Working with Mrs. Noland to form a wellness section in the library including cookbooks and guidance for healthy lifestyles.
